TikTok Offers The Community Control to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds
TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it presently contains over 1 thousand million AI videos.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.
The Broader AI Trend
Studies have shown that approximately 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for inferior, factory-style content that is often absurd or bizarre.
“We know from our community that many people like content created using AI tools, from AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a company executive.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 mn media items are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a relatively small portion of its overall inventory.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be in a position to decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they see by accessing the content preference option in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting include current affairs, clothing, beauty, and dance.
Content Labeling and Policies
The platform’s policies require content makers to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.
In addition, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is intended to help prevent users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2 million educational fund for professionals and groups to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit charitable organizations focused on training coding and technology.
Platform Protection
The platform has justified its safety measures, following discussion over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is set to cut hundreds of positions in its trust and safety team in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by people. The company reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the previous year due to reliance on its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
