This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
